RPGs for StillCon 2 No easy way.

Ok gang we had some stellar performances in the RPG room this con but over all the room was half empty all weekend long. Not due to any fault expect that large quantities of GMs were just not available. I believe we had every free GM in Central Oklahoma at the con. I've been talking to store managers in Tulsa and OKC and the truth is out there: RPG play and sales in OK are way, way down.

That sucks because the guys we had running this con were great! Sean and Brent made a magnificent effort to get Pathfinder organized play off the ground, yet they only had the two of them. Loren Dean was by far the most popular GM at the con with his totally rocking Crafty Games table and Danny held a great classic in Deadlands but the truth is we just didn't have enough games to fill those tables and I can't seem to find the talent locally. This is a rough state of affairs since in days of yore we could rally 15-20 GMs from Stillwater alone.

So the question is what can be done for RPGs? Obviously they need to be at the con but with so many other games pushing their play space to the seams and RPGs dragging I'm under some serious pressure to give that OK2 ballroom to a bigger event like Cards or miniatures. Plus I can't seem to find a volunteer brave enough to spear head a serious RPG presence at the Con.

Can RPGs bounce back and fill that space? And if it needs more time to grow where can we work the RPGs in elsewhere in the hotel so we can use that OK 2 ballroom on a larger draw?

Please post your thoughts

How much space can the con get? Back in Los Angeles, the Strategicons actually used sleeping rooms with the furniture temporarily removed (like this year's Consuite) as RPG breakout rooms. Minis and cards got put in big multi-table rooms, but the RPGs got cozy privacy. Not that I'm an advocate of that--I could go either way.  But I've seen it done. Can it be done here, maybe with easels in the halls serving as signposts to the games?

Alternately, and way simpler, what's the Dealer situation? Is there enough Dealer interest to just swap the Oklahoma rooms, putting RPGs in OK1 and the Dealers in OK2?

Jim,

I am willing to run a game system called Feng Shui.  Matt Grider has run it before.  Lot os fun, based on cheesy martial arts movies (Big Trouble in Little China being a prime example1)

Sounds great Will,

Let me know day you're a vailible and we'll find a table for you.

We've made some arrangements with the hotel and it looks like we may get the bar for the tabletop and board game area. It has lots of table space, and a working bar. We're still working out the details, stand by.

OK,

Here's the final solution.

We're gutting a bank of hotel rooms adjioning the main lobby (where Magic and Warhammer will be) and placing two 7 person tables in each. These we have dubbed the "RPG suites". Why, well they get their own bathrooms and AC units unilike the rest of the con and that's pretty "suite"

So RPGA will be running 4 tables in two adjoining rooms and Pathfinder will be running two tables in one room and Fantasycraft will be running Wyrmstone on the last the tables in the last room. These tables may have holes in their schedule. Both the Fantasy Craft and Pathfinder rooms may have openings, especially in the evenings when their day time participants are in the LARP. The RPGA rooms will no doubt run full tilt 24/7.

In addtion the Executive room in the main hallway directly across from the Oklahoma 1 Dealers Room wlill hold 2-3 7 person rounds and we're hoping to place the assorted demos and one shots in there over the weekend. the most pick up gaming will happen here and currentky we have Jake henzel scheduled to run a L5R game and Ogre running a DR. Who RPG Demo in this area. I figured this is were Peter Bradley will run his Castles and Crusades demo and I figure we'll settle Will's Feng Shui table and Danny's Dead lands in there too

I'd like to run a 3-4 hour session of Fiasco on Friday night in one of your game suites, if there's still one available for this period.

Fiasco is a pickup comedy storytelling game based loosely on Coen Brothers movies (e.g. Burn After Reading, Blood Simple, The Big Lebowski). Here's a link where the game is described:

http://www.bullypulpitgames.com/games/fiasco/

The rules are very intuitive, and can be learned during gameplay, so no prior preparation is needed.

Please let me know if you think you can fit this in.

I also wanted to let everyone know that Casey Christofferson will be at StillCon along with Peter Bradley and they will be running demos. Casey has offered to run atleast two 6 hours sessions of Castle and Crusades.

Here is his bio:
Casey was born in Iowa in 1971 and started playing Dungeons and Dragons in 1978. He currently lives the glamorous life in Wichita, Kansas where he teaches graphic design and drawing and painting to High School students. In his spare time Casey is an award winning designer who has authored, co-authored, or contributed to over twenty RPG products from such luminaries of the gaming industry as Goodman Games, Kenzer and Co. Necromancer Games, and Troll Lord Games. He currently designs, writes, and illustrates the Haunted Highlands series of adventure products for the Castles & Crusades role playing system.
